The in-between is made of fences, shuttered storefronts, rail lines, pavement you only stand on when you’re on your way somewhere else, ten-minute waits, quick cigarettes, a lighter that won’t catch, checking your reflection in a dark window, watching the traffic, deciding whether you’re going out or calling it, meeting someone for one drink, talking briefly, moving on before anything settles, music leaking from someone’s earbuds, a missed call you ignore, hands shoved deeper into pockets, the last train time in the back of your head.
